Over my 30+ years of music industry experience, I have often been asked how much should one budget for a first piano (or as some like to call it, a “starter” piano)?  The problem with this question is the assumption that you will buy more than one piano in your lifetime. Over 90% of customers never buy a second piano.

Here are two possible reasons why:

free spinet piano

This is a spinet piano. Spinet pianos are less than 40″ tall. They have no value and make poor lessons pianos. You can often find them free.

  1. The customer bought an inadequate practice instrument to begin with and the student became disenchanted and uninterested because their at-home practice doesn’t translate to “the real thing.”  The student decided to quit and the parents congratulated themselves for not spending more money on something their student is no longer interested in.  Everybody loses.
  2. The customer bought a good quality piano that will serve their family well for 10-20 years, and they see no need to upgrade.  Because the family invested in a good quality piano, the student(s) will enjoy playing it regularly and they will see steady improvement. Everybody wins.

Compact digital pianos like this Roland model can provide you with a wonderful sound and touch without taking up a lot of room.

Selecting a good practice instrument doesn’t always mean buying a new (or “expensive”) piano. Purchasing a good quality and well-maintained used piano might be one option (though we always recommend having a piano technician review your prospective used piano purchase before you buy).  Used pianos can be tricky to shop for because everyone things their piano is “in good shape” (when that is rarely true).  Still, the right used piano could work well as a “starter” instrument.  You might also consider buying a good quality digital piano.  Digital pianos don’t need to be tuned, and – with Bluetooth connectivity built-in – they can actually accelerate your musical development using various music apps. Digital pianos are also less expensive than comparable upright pianos.  I would highly recommend a lessons-quality digital piano over an old, used upright or grand piano. Plus, if you purchase yours from Riverton, you’ll also get a substantial warranty, video training, and a full trade-up opportunity if you decide to move to an acoustic piano later on.  Finally, you can also rent a piano or digital piano.  This is an excellent way to ensure that you have an adequate practice instrument in the home without investing a ton of money up front.  After six months or so, you’ll know if your student is enjoying their piano lessons and, thus, will be ready to make a more long-term investment.

The most important thing is to avoid the temptation to purchase a cheap keyboard or an old “beater” piano “just to start with.”  That almost never results in a successful lifetime of music making.

We only get one shot at making piano a lifetime skill and we don’t want to waste it!  In fact, there are three critical elements that – if carefully observed – give your student an overwhelming chance at success.  Here they are (in order):

  1. The Piano Teacher – The right piano teacher can make all the difference in how your student progresses and how much (s)he enjoys making music. Find a compatible teacher who has the skills to motivate and challenge your student and – not only will (s)he succeed at the piano, (s)he will develop a lifelong relationship with a new friend and mentor.
  2. The Piano or Digital Piano – I can’t stress enough how important it is to have a good instrument for your practice at home. Again, the better the piano, the more you will want to play it. A fine piano almost becomes an extension of yourself – almost like a good friend – giving back to you all that you put into it.
  3. Family Support – It’s not enough to merely want your students to be successful.  You have to make room in your home for a practice instrument, you have to make room in your budget for lessons, and you have to make room in your schedule for recitals, practice help and so much more.  At first, it may be challenging to hear a new student practicing the same thing over and over, but your enthusiasm and interest in your students’ progress will make all the difference!

piano store scottsdale

Anybody can sell you a piano. Build a relationship with an experienced dealer who can show you all your options – from hybrid pianos to digitals to handcrafted concert grands. The time you take to explore your options will be a blessing later!

A good piano is an investment.  …and like most investments, if can provide rewards for generations to come if you make the right choices.  I always recommend piano buyers spend as much as they can on the piano because – when you buy a good piano – your entire family will enjoy it for decades!  … and – since the cost of pianos goes up every year – buying the best piano you can afford now will save you money in the future.

Maybe the best question to ask (instead of “How little can I spend and get something that will work?”) is “Which piano will my family and I enjoy for many years to come?”  Bet on success and you’ll usually find it!  If not, you can always sell that good-quality piano and get most of your money back.  The biggest risk isn’t financial at all.  The biggest risk is getting an instrument that won’t inspire your student – causing him or her to miss out on a lifetime of music making.  Why run that risk?  Get a good (That doesn’t necessarily mean “expensive”) piano from the beginning and you’ll experience the magic of music making for the rest of your life!

The decision to have a piano in your home is one that you will never regret. A good piano will bring you and your family innumerable hours of joy, stress relief, and musical fulfillment.  …and those lucky enough to take piano lessons will be forever changed!  Ask yourself.  How much is that worth?
